Joane
Abandoned by her family, starving, and unable to point to a vocation, Joane nearly died. Now, she employed full time, and living her best life ever.
When Joane came to WSB, she weighed just 86 pounds. Joane’s first words to us were, “I’m hungry.” Found by Faulkner County Sherriff’s deputies, alone and abandoned in her small home, Joane had been surviving on canned green beans and bottled water with no electricity. Joane had previously worked as a caregiver. A gardening accident a year earlier had rendered her blind, and her husband refused to care for her.
Joane’s husband drove her into the woods, and left her. She used the sounds of the highway and her dog, Precious, to make her way back home.
A scholarship afforded Joane the initial months at WSB, where she could heal until she could point to a vocational direction.
A former caregiver, Joane quickly learned how to be blind from using a cane to learning the technology to live independently. “In just my first week here, I experienced more kindness than I had in the four years since losing my eyesight.” Today, Joane works for IFB solutions and has her own apartment, a contributing member of society society again.
